In the known stories about this constellation it is almost always protrayed as an arrow. One story tells that it is the arrow with which Apollo killed the Cyclops. Another story has it as one of Hercules' arrows.

Alpha Sagitti (19h 40m +18°00) 4.3 magnitude yellow class G0 star. It lies about 580 light years distant.

Beta Sagitti (19h 41.0m +17°28') 4.3 magnitude yellow class G8 star. It lies about 620 light years distant.

Gamma Sagitti (19h 58m +1929') 3.4 magnitude reddish class M2 star about 170 light years dist ant.
